Orthodontics For Children in San Antonio TX

It's best for the orthodontist to see children by age 7 to advise if orthodontic treatment is required and the best time for that patient to be treated. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and crossbites, crowding and other problems can be evaluated.

When treatment is begun early, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment.

Before and After Gallery

before and after child

This patient's lower teeth and lower jaw were in front of the upper teeth and upper jaw. Her lower teeth were loose due to the bad bite and the tissue was receding on the lower front teeth. The first phase of treatment corrected the bite in the front. The gum tissue in the lower front has stopped receding and the teeth have tightened up (are not loose).

before and after child

This patient’s front teeth were so spaced apart that the eruption of the upper canines (eye teeth) were blocked. If left untreated, the cuspids would have to be surgically exposed and then brought down orthodontically.

before and after child

This patient had two teeth on the left side in crossbite. The upper teeth were behind the lower teeth. The lower left central was loose and the gum tissue was receding. Upon correction of the crossbite, the lower left central tightened up and the gum tissue normalized.

For Adults in San Antonio TX

As an adult, am I too old for braces?

You are never too old for braces!

As long as your teeth, gums, and supporting bone are healthy, there is no reason that your teeth can't be straightened. In fact, approximately 55% of our patients are adults from the ages of 18 to 68. Most of them are seeking treatment as adults because when they were young, their parents could not afford treatment. Our adult patients are a fun population to treat because they are usually highly motivated. So, don't let a few years get in the way of what you have always wanted out of life!

As an adult, I want my teeth straightened, but I do not want to wear braces. Is there an alternative?

Yes, it is a significant breakthrough in adult orthodontic treatment called the Invisalign System. This system uses the latest 3-D computer graphics technology to construct a series of removable custom-made, clear appliances that move the teeth in stages from their initial position to their corrected position. The Invisalign System has demonstrated effectiveness in treating mild to moderate crowding and space closure cases. It is not indicated for all cases.
